ENGINEERING / FOLLOW A REQUEST
Saving a document · Request trace
Trace validation, authorization, writes and failure handling end to end.
Where the request begins
- POST: Browser sends save → Parse and validate
- Valid input: Parse and validate → Session and permissions
- Authorized: Session and permissions → Transactional write
- Persistence: Transactional write → Commit succeeds
- Response: Commit succeeds → Return new version
Trace each step
| Step | Input | Output | Evidence to add for a real project |
|---|---|---|---|
| Transaction | Changes and baseline version | New version ID | Transaction and concurrency implementation |
| Response | Persisted result | A readable version | Response structure and client handling |
| Permissions | Session and target resource | Allow or deny | Authorization functions and policies |
| Route | Request body and path | Normalized parameters | Route files and handlers |
Failures and retries
01
Invalid input
If validation fails, do not enter the write transaction. Return errors linked to fields and preserve the user's input.
02
Version conflict
Reject an overwrite when a newer version exists. Let the user retrieve the latest baseline and decide how to merge.
03
Transaction failure
Roll back completely and do not report success. Record the request ID so the cause can be investigated.
04
Network interruption
A missing client response does not mean the server failed to commit. Retries need an explicit idempotency strategy.
Verification paths
Verify the flow with a normal save, an unauthorized save and a repeated request. This diagram describes a fictional system. When explaining real code, add files, symbols and repository versions for every step.
Using this template
01
Prepare your materials
Request entry point; Handlers and calls; Error and log examples
02
Keep and adapt
Preserve the logical relationships and data bindings. Adapt the sections and visual design to your readers, brand and actual materials.
Brands, projects, interviews and operating data in this template are fictional examples. They do not represent customers, research findings or investment advice. Preview forms do not collect or save answers.
